DOE’s submitted petition to the European Parliament considered admissible
The Executive Board of Greek Primary Teachers’ Federation (DOE) through its President Athanasios Kikinis submitted to the Petition Committee of the European Parliament Petition No 0580/2018 (on fixed-term contracts for primary school teachers in Greece) with which objects that, for many years, the Greek Government has failed to recruit permanent staff to meet the permanent functional needs of primary education. The petition refers also to the absence of provisions in national legislation on the protection of substitute teachers in accordance with European Union Law as well as to the important distinction that exists between permanent and substitute teachers at all levels of their working life.
The aim of the Petition is to call for the intervention of the European Committee to the Greek government in the direction of restoring the above mentioned issues and ultimately the achievement of the thousands of appointments of permanent teachers that public education urgently needs.
DOE has been officially informed by the chair of the Petitions Committee Cecilia Wikstrom that the petition was considered admissible and that on one hand European Committee was assigned to conduct a preliminary investigation and on the other hand it was forwarded to the Employment and Social Affairs Committee.
A recent e-mail sent to DOE by the Petition Committee notifies that now the petition is accessible to supporters. In this way any colleague can express they support to the petition making it stronger in view of its discussion.
DOE calls for the support of all teachers either permanent or substitute as well as of the whole society to reinforce this just cause and create in this way a high wave of pressure for this crucial effort which constitutes only a part of the continuous multidimensional fight that the education movement gives in order to achieve the appointment of the thousands of permanent teachers that the public education is in desperate need.
