“Protest on World Teachers’ Day 2018”
Dear colleagues,
The Executive Boards of DOE (Greek Primary Teachers’ Federation) and OLME (Federation of Secondary Schools Teachers of Greece) decided to hold a protest on Friday October 5th (World Teachers’ Day) at the Ministry of Education.
The policies of austerity, unemployment, heavy taxation and of the impoverishment of the working people as well as of the pensioners, with or without the excuse of memorandums, continue and intensify. The same applies regarding the policies of downgrading and underfunding of the public school.
At a time of obvious needs for immediate appointments of permanent teachers, the governmental declaration of a three years’ appointment process sounds only as a declaration made for reasons of impressions. The contract teachers, that bear restricted rights compared to their permanent colleagues, still continue to wander in faraway locations of Greece, remaining even homeless, and when they find a place to live this is unaffordable.
The fight of the Greek teachers for the reversal of these policies and the recognition in practice of their role and contribution coincides with the “celebration” of the World Teachers’ Day.
Our struggle is for
- a fourteen years’ public and free education with a two years’ compulsory early childhood education with immediate implementation all over the country
- immediate extensive appointments of permanent teachers to cover all the needs of public education
- equalization of the rights of contract teachers with the ones of the permanent teachers
- increased funding of the education sector
gradual replenishment of the losses in salaries and pensions.
